Research Scientist

We are recruiting a driven and passionate Research Scientist keen to use their research knowledge in a commercial setting. The role will focus on delivering client projects, involving designing novel studies, developing new methods, investigating the scientific literature, interpreting data to provide fit-for-purpose solutions for our clients and helping deliver the company sales strategy.

Magnitude Biosciences Ltd is a specialist contract research organisation delivering C. elegans solutions to the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. We are a team of multidisciplinary experts who combine our C. elegans expertise, unique automated assays, and novel patented healthspan imaging system (WormGazer™) to provide bespoke solutions for our clients. 

Our novel WormGazer™ imaging technology continuously monitors worm movement automatically, providing data on growth and development, healthspan and quantifiable data in behavioural assays. Our assays are designed to deliver solutions for understanding mode of action for compounds and other interventions, understanding toxicity, supporting drug discovery in biotech and testing novel food ingredients for potential health benefits.

About the Role     

The post holder will work closely with our other Research Scientists and Business Development Managers. Main responsibilities: 

  • Act as key workstream lead (WSL) and perform lab work needed to deliver client and internal ROI R&D projects 
  • As WSL responsible for communicating and escalating to project lead any project risks and impacts when delivering client or ROI R&D projects, providing solutions and recommendations for risk mitigation and contingency planning 
  • Subject Matter Expert in client sales calls, commercial activities and internal ROI R&D projects and responsible for writing presentations and client reports 
  • Design, develop, validate and execute novel assays for client or internal ROI R&D projects with appropriate methodology and lab protocols 
  • When required act as commercial lead as Business Development Manager for client calls and proposals
  • Draft novel study designs for client proposals and advise on bespoke project feasibility 
  • Drive technical problem solving for project delivery   
  • Conduct detailed literature reviews to investigate R&D challenges to provide bespoke solutions 
  • Advise on relevant, current and up to date research and laboratory techniques 
  • Work closely with other functional areas and colleagues to ensure that all studies are performed in a quality, timely and scientific manner (including compliance with applicable best practice and regulatory guidelines). 

    Essential Criteria

    • Educated to BSc or MSc in a relevant subject 
    • At least 3 years C. elegans experience
    • Experience working in a commercial lab.
    • Excellent attention to detail
    • Excellent problem-solving skills
    • Strong communicator both verbally and in writing
    • Willingness to adapt and learn to work in a commercial setting
    • Ability to work in a team     
    • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to a variety of business challenges 
    • Strong work ethic and commitment 

    Desirable criteria      

    • A PhD or equivalent 
    • Ability to design new experiments to address scientific questions 
    • Molecular biology knowledge
    • Experience in the following sectors pharmaceutical, biotechnology, ageing or health and nutrition
    • Knowledge of assay development and validation

    Hours: 35 per week

    The salary will be appropriate for the skills and experience of the successful candidate.
