Graduate Hardware Engineer 

We are looking to recruit a Graduate Hardware Engineer who will support business development through the creation, development and implementation and maintenance of automated hardware and software for imaging and preparation of biological samples. 

Our Graduate Hardware Engineer will become a pivotal member within a small and passionate team that delivers solutions to ageing and longevity research around the world. 

About Magnitude Biosciences

Magnitude Biosciences is a specialist contract research organisation delivering C. elegans solutions to biotechnology, manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries. We are a team of experts who combine our C. elegans expertise, unique automated C. elegans assays and Healthspan technology and understanding of customer challenges to accelerate customised projects tailored to answer customers’ specific research questions. 

We are a small but quickly growing company who started off as a Durham University spin-out and are now successfully working with industry customers including longevity biotechs, natural products suppliers and large manufacturing companies. 

Magnitude Biosciences is currently situated at NETPark, a science park in Sedgefield, 10 miles from both Durham City and Darlington.

About the Role

The post holder will work closely with our CTO and Lead Development Engineer to:

  • Develop, build and test new hardware to expand the automation of our laboratory imaging and sample preparation systems.
  • Creating, modify, maintain and manage electrical/mechanical designs for existing and new laboratory automation and imaging systems.
  • Analyse electrical/mechanical based designs to identify integration opportunities and challenges. 
  • Resolve electrical/mechanical issues throughout hardware design, development, manufacture, integration and qualification.
  • Develop practical and effective ways to integrate systems, ensuring compatibility and optimising functionality, liaising with laboratory team as required.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical and electrical issues on in-house systems as required. 

Essential criteria

  1. A relevant degree or PhD in a STEM subject OR equivalent industry experience.
  2. Ability to work well in a team 
  3. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to a variety of business challenges 
  4. Excellent problem solving and innovative solutions finding skills
  5. Strong work ethic and commitment 

Desirable but not essential criteria

  1. Using CAD software to design mechanical parts
  2. Design and use of motion control systems
  3. Thermal modelling and design
  4. Rapid prototyping including using tools such as 3d printers and laser cutters
  5. Microcontroller level software design and implementation
  6. Performing assembly of complex devices following written protocols
  7. Programming in the Python language

The salary will be appropriate for the skills and experience of the successful candidate.  This position is full time and will be based on-site at our Sedgefield site in County Durham.

Hours:  Full time - 35 hours per week
